The C.A.T.I Project

Project type

Mixed Media

Date

May 2025

Location

Glasgow

This project, as part of my 3rd year Design Practice degree, was to find our own 'Stalled Space' in Glasgow and create our own design concepts for the space to be reused. I chose a small area in Kelvingrove park in between the Art Gallery and the University of Glasgow campus.

My project overall aims to raise awareness for people who have completed suicide, and bring together a community of people who have lost someone in the same way. We often don't think about the long lasting impact on loved ones when someone completes suicide, we just can't seem to imagine it. So I felt it was important to create a place that holds onto the personal nature of losing someone in this way, and give them a name instead of just being part of a statistic.

It's called the C.A.T.I. Project. ( Creating As Their Inclusion )

The two sculptures placed in the centre of the space are placed arching over a small glass orb to represent our lost loved one, and depicts the way we hold onto those close to us. The 'quilted' design covering both is to depict the largest part of my project. Each piece of fabric stitched would be donated by someone who has lost someone to suicide, and each flower in any of the five flower beds would be tagged with the name and details of someone who has completed suicide.

This project would need significant media traction and donations in order to fulfill the full project, so I created a site specifically for the C.A.T.I project. It contains details on the project and a form page for donors to fill out to take part.

Overall, I was glad I picked this concept. I have wanted to pour my grief over losing my friend into a specific project, and I believe this was the perfect one. Catianna was such a talented person, she deserves to be remembered as all the amazing things she did and made, not just as part of a statistic.
